The Mayflower provides an incomparable late summer and early autumn lineup that includes large budget shows of Oklahoma, Les Misérables, and also the Magic of Motown, along with two runs of Faulty Towers the dining experience, and a whole host of other performances and specifically themed evenings. The Mayflower is unique in being the first successful theater organization in Southampton. The reasons for this no doubt to do with its phenomenal and innovative range of shows that are regularly on. Oklahoma, that stars Marti Webb and Mark Evans, is playing Tuesday the seventeenth via to Saturday the twenty-first of August. This specific touring version of the Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical is produced through the creators from the massive hits Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, South Pacific, and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Everybody within the family is sure to love the story famously set in the Western Frontier of America taking place within the time of conflict between the cattlemen and farmers. The Mayflower is also proud to welcome the twenty-fifth anniversary production of Les Misérables, which is the world’s longest running musical of all time. It will be at the Mayflower for only three weeks, from Tuesday, August 24th through Saturday, September 11th. The brilliant all new cast is led by London’s West End and Broadway star John Owen Jones, who has been acclaimed by the New York Post since the really finest Jean Valjean since the days of Colm Wilkinson, and also graced through the West End stars such as Gareth Gates who plays Marius and Earl Carpenter who plays Javert. Finally within the category of big budget stage musicals may be the Magic of Motown, showcasing the greatest Motown live tribute concert ever. In this stunning production, music of Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Temptations, The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Martha Reeves and scores of others is featured. This display features literally dozens of stunning costumes, a gorgeously choreographed cast, and fully thirty-six memorable hits from the sixties, seventies, and eighties. It’ll play 1 night only, on Tuesday, September 14th. For 1 man comedians and acts, the Mayflower outperforms once again. Jethro will carry out his Too Late To Grow Up display on Thursday, September 16th. Sean Lock will carry out his signature Lockipedia on Saturday, September 18th. Lisa Williams, the worldwide known psychic and clairvoyant, will be seen on Sunday, September 19th. A unique treat within the coming months is Faulty Towers, the Dining Experience. This well-known and long running television display turned touring musical makes two stops since the initial appearance rapidly sold out.

When you read J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings did you skip past all the Elvish singing? Some people do. But when you saw the movies based on the books, did you get up and leave the theater when the singing started up? Of course not. Most people fell in love with the Celtic-styled music of Middle-earth from the movies. Since then fans of Tolkien have tried to capture the essence of Elvish singing as Tolkien himself might have imagined it. Heather Downing, performing as Rehtaeh, is one of thos gifted fans who is reaching for her Elvish voice.

Since 2005 the enchanting singer has released 3 CDs featuring Elvish music. She has performed at Renaissance faires and other public venues. Now her reach has grown longer and she works with musicians around the world via the Internet. According to a recent interview on Middle-earth Talk Radio, a popular podcast, Downing has even visited New Zealand’s version of Middle-earth, where perhaps she may find immortality if she is chosen to contribute her beautiful voice to the soundtrack of “The Hobbit”.

Among the hauntingly seductive tracks you can listen to on her Website, “Elvish Wedding Song” and “Aquatania” have elicited much comment but with three song collections there seems to be something for everyone. Rehtaeh’s musical background includes performing with the metal band Hallucination but she has also sung contemporary gospel and performed in short videos uploaded to YouTube.

Tolkien and music fans alike can see Rehtaeh perform live at Tolkien Moot in Spokane, WA over the weekend of August 13-15. The convention offers a mix of Middle-earth role-playing gaming and Tolkien presentations. Sessions will be broadcast live over the Web for fans around the world to enjoy, including Rehtaeh’s three performances.

Music, like language, changes through the centuries. But music is life. A Bach invention, a Brahms symphony, and a Beatles song are different forms in different genres, and at first they may sound as if they have nothing in common. But they all use the same musical “language” and follow basically the same rules. Music can alleviate pain caused by exercise, making working out more pleasurable. “Music is integral to exercise,” explains the head of London’s Gymbox chain, Richard Hilton. “We even have live DJs. We’ve never measured the effect scientifically, but it definitely creates an uplifting mood that people love. The anticipation at the sound of the music in movies could scare an audience out of its seat. Simply adding a track of background music can greatly improve a video. Some of the most suspenseful movies of all time are known by their music tracks (Jaws and Psycho, for instance). Music is magical. Whether it is fast or slow, loud or soft, haunting or uplifting, music makes our world a richer place. Some people dance to it, some write, play or sing it, and others just listen. Music’s power is that it touches everyone in different ways. Teresa Lesiuk, in a five week study on software developers at the University of Windsor CA, observed that “positive affect and quality-of-work were lowest with no music, while time-on-task was longest when music was removed.” Furthermore, “positive mood change and enhanced perception of design” were recorded with the addition of music.

For many people, a doctor or dentist’s waiting-room can be an anxious and uncomfortable experience often compounded by tedium. Some postpone the appointment for as long as possible to avoid the discomfort.

Today, individuals are being confronted by a situation where one is forced to listen to music whether by choice or without. Music is played in nearly all department stores and super markets. Even whilst walking in the streets, we find cars blaring with music. Whether it’s in the car, at home, or in a concert hall, listening with your children and then talking about music is a great way to engage both of you in the classical experience. The first element at play is music’s ability to establish an optimal state of mental absorption that psychologists call “flow”, which is why Paula Radcliffe (and other top runners) use music to prepare for intense training sessions. After you hear a piece, try to hum one or more of the themes, or pick out the instruments you hear. You’ll be surprised how fast your children will build a repertoire of pieces you both know and like when you listen together.
